Up In Arms and the Orange Tree Theatre in association with Reading Rep present
GERMAN SKERRIES
by Robert Holman
A friendship, a marriage, a holiday, a death – German Skerries fills the stage with the meetings and departures that make us human.
German Skerries was a new departure for us – having made four plays by Barney Norris, it was the first time we staged the work of another writer. We wanted to explore producing other writers as a way of speaking up for different lives and different backgrounds, extending the reach of our work and discovering new theatrical languages that could enrich what we already did. Robert Holman was the perfect place to start. Advocating the values his work represented felt like a telling statement about our own vision of the theatre. We’d started a conversation with Paul Miller as he took over the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, and Paul was willing to support our journey into staging other writers, other worlds, and give us a platform for this show. We were able to book a totally new kind of tour to accompany the London run, playing a different profile of theatre to the ones who booked up Barney’s work, and discover new audiences as a result. The production, German Skerries’ first revival since it premiered at the Bush in 1976, was acclaimed by critics and audiences, with Michael Billington hailing it as the arrival of a ‘theatre of quietism’.
